The Energy Cost of Judgment—and How to Reclaim It - Mindset Coaching to Reclaim Your Energy

We don’t always realize how often we give our energy away through judgment.
Sometimes we’re quick to criticize someone’s choices, their appearance, or even the way they drive. These moments may seem insignificant, but they quietly drain our energy and disconnect us from our own alignment. And when we hold strong emotional charge around certain judgments, life often brings us full circle—not as punishment, but as an invitation to understand.
It’s not about agreeing with others or excusing harmful behavior. It’s about witnessing, allowing, and expanding our capacity to see the human behind the behavior, even when we don’t understand.
I'm an open-minded person and pride myself on showing up for my clients in very nonjudgmental ways. People feel safe telling me their deepest challenges because of this. When I began paying attention, I was surprised by how frequently judgment crept into my thoughts, often automatically. A driver speeding past only to stop at the next red light? I’d think, Well, you didn’t get very far. That’s a judgment. Even that tiny flicker of commentary sends my energy outward.
On the flip side, I noticed how freeing it feels to reframe. The other day, I saw someone dressed in a wildly bold, colorful outfit. Instead of going into critique, I caught myself and thought, What a beautiful expression of creativity. Just that small shift brought me back into my own center.
This practice is like building a muscle. We start with the unconscious, habitual judgments—the fleeting ones. As we become more aware, we’re better equipped to handle the ones with emotional charge, like political posts, personal disclosures, or values that differ from our own.
The other night, I was sharing my frustration with a friend about one of the tech providers whose software I use in my business. I had invested a significant amount of money into their hardware, training, and software, but after multiple attempts to get support, they never responded. Interestingly, they were very responsive during the sales process. Thankfully, my background in computer tech and my determination not to give up helped me find a solution on my own.
As I told my friend the story, I noticed the emotional charge behind my words, like I was trying to prove how wrong this company was. In that moment, I paused, pulled my energy back, and said, "Their company values simply don’t align with mine." With that awareness, I realized I could stop investing more money, time, or emotion into them. Instead, I can redirect my energy toward companies that truly value customer support and align with my standards. I don’t need to stay in judgment—I can choose differently.
Instead of spiraling into imaginary arguments or venting to others, we can pause and say: I don’t know their story. I don’t have to understand. I send them love, and I call my energy back to me.
That conscious reclamation of energy is powerful. Judgment no longer has to be a drain—it becomes an opportunity for sovereignty, compassion, and deeper self-awareness.
If this resonates, I invite you to try this practice. Not to shame yourself, but to witness your judgments with mindfulness and curiosity. Ask: Am I afraid of being judged? Am I judging myself? This valuable exercise can help you shift your mindset and stop draining your energy.
Awareness brings freedom.
In that freedom, we begin to see people—not just as personalities but as unique expressions of Source, doing the best they can with their awareness.
It keeps life interesting.
With Gratitude
